Reflection on Victoria Day in Canada
Every year, Canadians celebrate Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria, who was born on May 24, 1819. Her birthday was officially declared a holiday in Canada in 1845, even before the Canadian Confederation in 1867.
Queen Victoria holds a special place in Canadian history. She was the reigning monarch during Confederation and is often remembered as the “Mother of Confederation.” Under her reign, Canada took important steps toward becoming a self-governing nation within the British Empire. She also chose Ottawa as the capital of Canada, helping shape the identity and unity of the young nation.
Today, Victoria Day is more than a remembrance of a monarch. For many Canadians, it marks the unofficial beginning of summer — a time of family gatherings, fireworks, opening cottages, gardening, and enjoying the beauty of creation after a long winter. Yet beneath the festivities lies a deeper invitation: to remember our roots, give thanks for our heritage, and reflect on the values that sustain a nation — unity, perseverance, service, and hope.
As Christians, we can also view Victoria Day through a spiritual lens. Queen Victoria once wrote, “We are not interested in the possibilities of defeat.” Her life reminds us that leadership is ultimately a calling to serve others with humility and faithfulness. Nations rise not only through political achievements, but through the moral and spiritual strength of their people.
Victoria Day invites us to pray for Canada — for wisdom among leaders, compassion among citizens, and unity amid diversity. It reminds us that while earthly kingdoms come and go, God’s kingdom endures forever. Patriotism becomes meaningful when it inspires us to become instruments of peace, justice, and charity within our communities.
In a world often divided by conflict and uncertainty, this celebration also speaks beyond Canada. It reminds everyone of the importance of remembering history, honouring sacrifice, preserving unity, and building societies rooted in dignity and mutual respect.
A fitting Scripture for this reflection is:
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” — Psalm 33:12
May this Victoria Day be not only a celebration of history and heritage, but also a moment to renew our faith, strengthen our communities, and thank God for the blessings we enjoy as a nation.
